Ups and downs make roller coasters worthwhile, but when fluctuations happen with your blood sugar, it is the very opposite of exciting. Blood sugar, also known as glucose, is an essential energy source for our bodies and when it spikes either too high or too low, we feel the adverse effects.
Here are some symptoms you may have felt before if your blood sugar has spiked up or down. When your blood sugar gets too high, over 200 milligrams per deciliter, it can cause symptoms like headaches, fatigue, increased thirst, and frequent urination, per the Mayo Clinic. And when your blood sugar gets too low, 70 milligrams per deciliter or less and can cause symptoms like feeling shaky, tired, anxious, hungry, irritable, sweaty, or having an irregular heartbeat, according to the Mayo Clinic. These symptoms can happen to anybody, with diabetes or not, and they can be harmful and unhealthy, so here are some tips to keep your glucose levels stable.
Eat more and smaller meals
- Remember what Sir Issac Newton said, “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The same logic applies to blood sugar spikes which then lead to crashes. Anything that goes up, must come down. You can create a smaller window for your glucose to fluctuate by eating smaller and more often, which helps to stabilize your blood sugar.
Drink enough water
- Water helps to lower blood sugar levels. Since our blood is made up of 83% of water, we must ensure that we are hydrating our bodies because when we start lose water without rehydrating, the volume of our blood goes down, however, the sugar stays the same. Stay hydrated to prevent unwanted blood sugar spikes.
Avoid sugary soft drinks
- Try to eliminate or lessen the amount of sugary sodas you drink on a daily basis. The liquid form of sugar in sodas will heighten your blood sugar instantly and will cause a crash shortly after.
Do not skip meals
- If you skip a meal during the day, your blood sugar can drop too low giving you symptoms like becoming shaky, sweaty, irritable, etc. When you eat right after skipping a meal, your blood sugar spikes, as it tries to quickly store excess sugar in your blood.
Consume fiber daily
- If you are not consuming enough fiber daily it will lessen your ability to control sugar in your body. Eating foods containing fiber, like Raw Rev Glo bars, can help to control blood glucose.
